Before going through my main priorities for each position, I'd like to share some background for those who aren't already familiar with UBC's governance structure. UBC provides a summary of all of its governance operations on its website, but a good overview is the high level org chart below.
As you can see on the chart, the University has a bicameral governance model, which means the Senate and Board of Governors are separate but equal bodies, covering Academic and Business affairs of the University, respectively. I am running for a position on both bodies because effective student advocacy often requires continuous collaboration across them.
Divest from companies complicit in Genocide
Maintain sub-inflationary tuition increases
Expanding funding to vital teaching and learning programs like the UDL Fellows
Increasing budget transparency at the faculty level
Making the Food Security Fund permanent
Introducing new graduation periods beyond the November and May options
Creating a January Standing Deferred Period
Continuing to action recommendations from the external review of Senate so changes to policy happen when you need them
Pushing for a review of disability policy LR7 to make CfA procedures more flexible to students and professors
Beyond my top priorities, are a list of policies which I would support given their introduction as a meeting topic. The reason I've made this distinction is because governance at UBC is slow. Very slow. It took the Senate 4 months to agree to change its start time from 6 pm to 5 pm. So, given that there is a limit to what we as advocates can get done in one year, I've divided my goals into two parts: my active priorities and motions I would support given the chance.
The Accessibility needs of UBC students have gone unaddressed for far too long. As someone diagnosed with ADHD, I have experienced first-hand the tedious nature of accessing vital services at UBC. If we're going to work to improve this, we'll need tangible solutions. Here are a few that I'm committed to:
Institute lecture capture technology in all teaching spaces
Increase CfA Advisor Numbers
Advocate for UBC to Adopt the Access4All Campaign
Extend the period for Exam Hardship
Let's not mince words, we are facing an affordability crisis unlike any we've seen in generations. According to a recent survey, 1/3 of UBC students said they had experienced food insecurity. On top of that, rental prices continue to soar and UBC still increases tuition despite student pleas. We need decisive action now to ensure no student goes hungry. It's time we:
Increase the Yearly Food Security Initiative Funding from $800,000 to $1.2 Million
Advocate to increase student bed construction commitment from 3,300 to 5,000
Review Tuition Increase Engagement Process
Commitments to EDI&I are frequently touted with the creation of committees, task forces, and lofty goals. Far too often, these commitments either don't provide any material difference or are never followed through. We need policies that accomplishes both. As VP Academic I will:
Ensure that UBC follows through on Climate Action Plan promises including full divestment from fossil fuels by 2030
Review Policy of Exclusion of International Students from need-based aid
Introduce an appeal option for victims of sexual violence
